LIVE FOREVER? OF COURSE!
We Boomers just lost Davey Jones of the Monkees, Donna Summers, the Queen of Disco and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees. I don’t know about you but I felt a real sense of loss. My friend Pam suggested that Boomers feel they will live forever so it’s hard to believe we are losing so many who were instrumental in our lives during our impressionable youth. How does Keith Richards “keep on truckin’ ?” Formaldehyde?
We are all trying to make our way through the tunnel of life and there is definitely a light at the end. We are busy making plans on how to spend our savings, vacations to take, downsizing to a smaller house. Then either a friend or personality dies at our age, bringing us back to earth and to the real world.
I hear all the time that when couples or groups of friends get together for lunch, dinner or parties, the topic of conversation turns to illness, disease or death. It’s hard to get way from it. A really old (80 years old) couple made a suggestion: limit the death stuff to only 7 minutes, then move on. Sounds good to me.
I noticed how much I am missing my old friends lately. Recently, I made a list of these friends I haven’t connected with and called or emailed them. What fun I had catching up, finding up out what was going on with them. If you are tech minded SKYPE them.
There is more life behind me now than in front of me (unless I do live forever). Occasionally, I will re-account what I have accomplished in my life because I don’t seem to have the need to continue accomplishing things the way I used to.
My friends have a bucket list. This gives them something to plan for. I think many Boomers still feel 16 or 21, which gives us many more years on the planet until we look into the mirror. Who is that person? I still get together with a group of high school friends to celebrate our birthdays and life. It is very easy for us to slip back to the days of being 16. Oh, the wonderful stories we tell.
I’m not really sure we Boomers want to live forever, but we Boomers just think we will live forever.
