I’ve been working with a woman who is 86 years old but she is definitely not the frail elderly. She is feisty, determined and exercises every day doing something. She actually has muscle definition, biceps, delts, triceps etc. She stands up straight. She has been working out since she was 16. She has modified her personal workout as she has aged. I want to be her when I am that age. Self motivation is very important. Outside motivation (us as teachers) is important also. It is up to us to help instill the importance of not only Pilates but all movement to our clients. Pilates is not an isolated method but as Joe said is a lifestyle. We do modified basic Pilates exercises (foot/leg work, feet in straps etc.). I have her doing elastic band arm work standing simulating activities of daily living. I give her safe exercises she can do on her own when I don’t see her. I love her energy, she loves my energy. This is a team effort.
Tip of the Day: Stand in a doorway facing the door jam. Reach as high as you can up the wall to help you extend your back. Stand tall-Good Posture Becomes You.
