Pilates is not only an exercise program but it is a way of life according to Joe Pilates. If you work the program, Pilates will change your life and the way you think about yourself in life. I see this results every day. My client with the knee replacement comes to me faithfully twice a week for me to push her, prod her and make her hurt. She has scar tissue build up in her knee and unfortunately her Physical Therapist didn’t do the right things with her right after surgery. She is in pain 24/7 but needs to work her new knee because her other knee is failing and she might need that one replaced. She is a fighter and actually wants me to push her to her limit which is very painful for her. While she does foot and leg work (very small ROM) I talk to her constantly about why she is doing this, how important it is to her life activities and improving her ability to enjoy doing more than sitting on the sofa. She has conquered the toilet now it’s time for the stairs. Last meeting she announced she actually walked up the stairs so I took her to the stair case and walked down the stairs with her. She said “you are never satisfied, are you”? I said “why should I be”? She is now doing 250 rotations on the bike and doing the stairs carefully. Now she is motivated to do more each time on her own. This is very exciting for me. I call her my “new athlete”.
