We already know that Pilates is great for back pain, osteoporosis, posture training and senior fitness. But Pilates is exceptional for MS clients. My client cannot use her right leg, she is on a walker and a brace for drop foot. She has already lost 50% control of her right arm. I know I have my work cut out for me when she arrives twice a week. We start seated squeezing Pilates balls with not much air in them to strengthen fingers and hands. I use the ball behind her back to practice siting up straight. I have her squeeze the ball between her legs and with her hands she squeezes a Pilates ring. Then we adjourn to the Reformer.
I place the jump board in backward with the wood shelf facing the client so I can hold her feet on the board and control her legs. We can actually do one leg at a time, I control the action leg while she holds the other leg. I hooked up slastixs to the risers with gyro straps to securely hold her feet and we do feet in straps. Actually, I hold her leg and foot and do knee circles and bicycle movements. She uses the slastixs to do hands in straps modified movements.
BEST OF ALL she can do THE HUNDRED. It’s her best move. She loves the hundred and does it several times. Last week she fell getting out of bed so while she was on the floor she said, “I might as well do the hundred while I’m down here”.
Tip of the day: 74% of all back surgeries FAIL. Stand tall. GOOD POSTURE BECOMES YOU.
